The National Football League has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he claims was an “inadvertent” obscene gesture made toward fans during a Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium.
Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“It was regrettable. That was kind of an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the signal was entirely accidental, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just put up the wrong finger,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Previous examples involve:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in early 2024.
